Donald Eugene Ellis, age 88, of Flora, Illinois, passed away Monday, January 26, 2026, at Heritage Woods Assisted Living Facility in Flora.
He was born on January 24, 1938, in Flora, the son of Raymond and Pearl (Turner) Ellis.
Don was a 1956 graduate of Flora High School. Following graduation, he began working as a painter in his father’s building business—a trade that became his life’s work. For more than 50 years, Don painted homes and businesses throughout Flora and the surrounding communities.
Don loved riding and caring for his horses and enjoyed walking, hunting, and playing and singing country music at area opries.
Don had a strong Christian faith. In his later years, he spent much of his time reading and studying the Bible. He held a deep belief in his Creator, whom he is now with in Heaven.
He is survived by his children: Mark (Sandy) Ellis of Chesterfield, Missouri, Ann (Perry) Sager of Mt. Vernon, Dona (Toon) Mols of St. Louis, Missouri, and Barry Ellis of Effingham; and 2 brothers: Jerry (Mary) Ellis of Flora and Jim Ellis of Spring, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother: Robert Ellis; and a sister: Judy Ellis.
A visitation will be held from 1 until 2 p.m. on Monday, February 2, 2026, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora. A funeral ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. Memorial donations are suggested to any charity of the donor’s choice, and these will be accepted through the funeral home. I remember Don from high school days at FTHS, a guy with a sense of humor.
Miss playing music with Don. We always had a good time pickin' together at the opries.
don was a good honest man for sure allways towed his auto.s and was there on his crash he come out good and he was a tough old fart for sure.
