Marvin Ray Tibbs, age 77, of Flora, Illinois, passed away Tuesday morning, March 3, 2026, at his home.
He was born January 19, 1949, in Effingham, the son of Harvey Thomas and Agnes Rowena (Butcher) Tibbs. He was united in marriage to Elaine Ann Kohrmann on August 23, 1969, and she preceded him in passing on September 25, 2002. He later married Brenda Atkisson on June 10, 2006, in Flora, and together they have shared 19 wedding anniversaries.
Marvin earned a degree in accounting from the University of Illinois. Following college, he began his career as an accountant for the St. Louis Cardinals for which he was a lifelong fan. Marvin began his employment at Flora Savings and Loan Association in February of 1985 as Assistant Manager and Treasurer. In 1988, he was appointed Executive Vice President and Manager and was also added as a member of the Board of Directors. Throughout his career at the bank, Marvin managed daily operations and oversaw a majority of the lending, helping many local families and businesses with their financial needs. In October 1992, the institution changed its name to Flora Savings Bank, and Marvin continued leading operations and lending millions of dollars within the community until his retirement in 2015. In 2018, Flora Savings Bank merged with Community Partners Savings Bank of Salem, and Marvin remained on the Board of Directors until retiring from that position in 2022.
Marvin was known for his great sense of humor and was often the life of the party, bringing laughter and energy wherever he went. He loved golfing, dancing, and cheering on his Illini basketball team. Marvin was also a dedicated member of the Flora Elks Lodge, where he proudly served as Exalted Ruler in 1991, leading the Flora Lodge to the National Elks Ritualistic Competition.
He is survived by his wife: Brenda Tibbs of Flora; 2 daughters: Kristie (Steve) Franzen of Sugar Grove and Jamie (Mike) Justice of Dekalb; 4 sons: Andrew Billingsley of Flora, Brandon (Shannon) Billingsley of Bargersville, Indiana, Chase Billingsley of Salem, and Sean Young of Cape Coral, Florida; and grandchildren: Regan, Jake, and Taylor Franzen, Lainey, Braden, and Will Justice, and Blake, Kallen, and Landen Billingsley.
He was preceded in passing by his parents; his first wife: Elaine Tibbs; an infant daughter: Lori Ann; a sister: Teresa Tibbs Bible; a niece: Jennifer Bible; and his beloved companion, his schnauzer A.J.
A funeral ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 8, 2026, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora with Jim Earleywine officiating. Interment will follow in St. Stephen Cemetery, Flora. Marvin was a friend of mine and classmate in both grade school and high school. He was smart, athletic and nice. We had many fun times together. I was honored that he attended my mother's funeral five years ago which was the last time we saw each other. I gave him a warm hug and thanked him for coming. Mom (Cordell) had been our Cub Scout Mother and Marv never forgot the cookies and treats she made for her boys. Thank you for your friendship many years ago, Marvin. My sincere condolences to the family.
