Jeremy Wayne Carter, age 47, of Casey, Illinois, and formerly of Clay County, passed away Thursday, August 6, 2026.
He was born January 15, 1979, in Flora, the son of Vernon and Tammy (Keck) Carter.
Jeremy had worked for the late Nick Ashley as a lift operator, helping set up large event tents for events such as the Farm Progress Show and various racing events. He later worked for John Deere in Mattoon as a forklift operator.
He enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially camping, catfishing, and coon hunting. Jeremy was also a big fan of rock concerts and going to the movies. He especially enjoyed being involved with the coon club, where he served as a guide during Black and Tan Days and other events.
Always smiling and ready to strike up a conversation, Jeremy never met a stranger. He had a warm and welcoming nature that made those around him feel at ease. His kindness, outgoing spirit, and the many memories he shared with others will be cherished by all who knew him.
He is survived by his children: Kaylee Heck-Shroyer, Hannah Heck, Deanna Mitchell, and Ceyerah Mitchell; mother: Tammy (Bill) Shroyer; grandchildren: Wyatt, Camden, Willow, and Ceyenna; 2 brothers: Jarrod (Ginny) Carter and Nathan Shroyer; nieces and nephews: Kaidince Carter, Jaidyn Carter, William Shroyer, and Ranger Shroyer; aunts: Kim Redfern, Amanda Keck, Peggy (Marty) Shroyer Leigh, and Shelly Shroyer Brooks and their families; uncles: Bill (Mellissa) Keck, Lee Watkins, Charlie Shroyer, James Shroyer and their families; extended family: Betty, Jamie, Shayne, Heather, Dakota, Christy, Craig, and Linda; former wife: Danielle Deback; special friend: Robin Dulaney; and way too many friends to list.
He was preceded in passing by his father: Vernon Carter; grandparents: James and Carolyn Keck, Katie Carter, Bucky and Geraldine Shroyer, and Mae Henderson; step-brother: Brent Shroyer; an aunt: Karen Watkins; a niece: Rozzalynn Carter; and a cousin: Krystal Shroyer.
A visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. on Friday, August 14, 2026, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora. Memorial donations are suggested to the American Heart Association or Clay County Coon Club, and these will be accepted through the funeral home. I have many fond memories of hanging out with Jeremy. He will be missed by many. Fly high my friend.
My favorite memory of Jeremy was from Clay City Grade School. On the days sloppy joes were on lunch menu, several kids would give him their sloppy joes. They were piled up high and he would do his best to eat them all.
Jeremy was an amazing man! He was so kind and outspoken! He always knew what it took to figure out any situation we encountered while setting up tents! Such a kind gentle giant!! I was so blessed to have known him and call him a friend! Such a sad day for all of us that loved and appreciated him in so many ways! My thoughts and prayers are with all of you in this season of great and tremendous loss!

I don't have any words... well yes I do... D@@n it Jeremy... He was a friend to many and im sure an enemy to some but he would still walk right up, smile that big smile and start up a conversation with them!! It didn't matter to him!! He had a heart of gold and will forever be missed. Fly high Jeremy until we meet again!!

Tammy, I can't tell you how sorry I am about Jeremy's passing..He was my first babysitting gig, ring bearer at mine and Randy's wedding, he was such a cutie pie, He couldn't say my name , so I was Feefer.. Vernon called me that till the day he passed away...Fly High Jeremy, you were a good boy... Big hugs Tammy and to all his family, may he rest in peace
