Mar 25th, 1935 - Jul 14th, 2025

Graveside Memorial Ceremony: 11 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2025, at Parker Cemetery

Those wishing to join the procession to Parker Cemetery may meet at the Xenia Fire Station at 10:30 a.m.

Martha Ellen Ayers, age 90, of Xenia, Illinois, passed away Monday morning, July 14, 2025, at her home.

She was born March 25, 1935, in Marion County, the daughter of Ace and Nancy Ellen (Sons) Waggoner.  She was united in marriage to Frederick Lederhouse Ayers on October 9, 1954, in East St. Louis, and together they shared 70 wedding anniversaries until his passing on February 1, 2025.

For 20 years Martha was a devoted military wife to her husband Fred during his service in the U.S. Air Force.  She always stood by him and her strong support led to special recognition when she was the recipient of a plaque from the Air Force.  Coming from a large family, Martha was the last surviving sibling of 10 children, and family had always been at the center of her life.  She enjoyed crocheting and collecting many things, especially family photos.

She is survived by her children: John D. (Jean M.) Waggoner of Lawrenceville, Georgia, Frederick “Rick” E. Ayers of Xenia, Thomas “Tom” H. Ayers of Xenia, and MaryKay Branch of Xenia; grandchildren: Jason (Emily) Waggoner of Lawrenceville, South Carolina, Beth (Joel) Hagens of Tamarack, Florida, Joel (Kathy) Waggoner of Lawrenceville, Georgia, Joseph (Becca) Waggoner of Wyncote, Pennsylvania, Lee (Michelle) Ayers of Racine, Wisconsin, Nathan (Rebecca) Ayers of Michigan, Adam Bensley of Wisconsin, Katherine Ayers of Xenia, and Crystal (Tim) Dolan of Crystal Lake; 22 great-grandchildren; a niece: Ruth (Draper) Duffina of Fairfield; and a sister-in-law: Susan Paden of Old Washington, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a grandson: Vernon Vaughn; 1 brother; 8 sisters; and a brother-in-law: Charlie Paden.

There will be a graveside memorial ceremony and interment for both Martha and Fred Ayers held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at Parker Cemetery with Pastor Bruce Horsley officiating.  Those wishing to join the procession to Parker Cemetery may meet at the Xenia Fire Station at 10:30 a.m.  The family suggests the most meaningful way to honor Martha’s memory is through a donation to the Xenia Volunteer Fire Department or Ronald McDonald House Charities, and these will be accepted through the funeral home.  To share a condolence or memory, visit: www.frankandbright.com
