Velma Marie Akes, age 82, of Xenia, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, October 1, 2025, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, surrounded by her family.
Velma was born November 5, 1942, in Centralia, the daughter of Earl L. and Agnes (Mays) Meredith. She married Forrest Smith in November 1961, and he preceded her in death on October 21, 1977. She later married Edward Eugene “Butch” Akes on September 27, 1985, at the grandstand in downtown Xenia, and they shared 40 wonderful years together.
Velma had worked as an administrative assistant, but her heart belonged to community service. She was active with the Clay County Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and the Xenia Fire Department Auxiliary, helped organize the Xenia Community Adults Luncheon, and volunteered at the annual Xenia Fish Fry. She also wrote a newspaper column for the Clay County Republican and the Wayne County Press, keeping neighbors up to date on Xenia news. Velma loved visiting with friends and playing bingo, and she and Butch were often out on dinner dates—most often at her favorite, the Skillet Fork Grill in Orchardville. In her younger years, she enjoyed painting with acrylics. She was a member of the Iuka General Baptist Church. Her family and grandchildren were her pride and joy, especially Scott and Paige. She will be remembered for her quick wit and for being fashionably late, true to her motto: “They’ll wait for ya’.”
Velma is survived by her husband: Butch Akes of Xenia; daughters: Pam Smith of Xenia and Ginger (Nick) Rasar of Lenoir City, Tennessee; sons: Norman Smith (Tammy McMeen) of Centralia and Timothy Akes (Rose Stewart) of St. Louis, Missouri; daughter-in-law: Danielle Akes of St. Louis, Missouri; 9 grandchildren: Scott Wooters, Kendra (John) Koch, Chelsea (Jacob) Oates, Paige Allen, Kristi (Anthony) Brooks, Brian (Kimberly) Smith, Talon (Megan) Akes, Tristan Akes, and Jonathon “Race” Rasar; 6 great-grandchildren: Elijah Brooks, Kara Koch, Grant Smith, Natalie Smith, Lauren Smith, and Quincy Akes; and sister-in-law: Nancy Coughlin of Xenia.
She is preceded in passing by her husband: Forrest Smith; daughter-in-law: Kathy Smith; brothers: Robert and Walter Meredith; 3 sisters: Lorene Gaston, Mildred Owens, and Helen Dean-Gaston; mother-in-law: Blanche Akes; and her beloved dogs: Maggie and Molly.
A funeral ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora, with Ray Barnes officiating. Interment will follow at Peaceful Valley Cemetery in Odin. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial donations are suggested to the “P.S. I Love You” fund. Please make checks payable to Pam Smith. These will be accepted through the funeral home. To share a condolence or memory, visit: www.frankandbright.com

We’re so sorry for your loss. It was meaningful to our family that she had the opportunity to meet her great-granddaughter — a moment we will always remember. Please know our thoughts are with you during this difficult time. Wishing you comfort, peace, and loving memories in the days ahead.
We will miss our dear friend Velma so much , we had vacations together , we had lots of dinner dates, we would meet up at Salem Park with food we just picked up during covid, she got stopped by Kevin Cripps going 73 in a 35 rushing to one of our dinner dates at the park, knowing it was her he would not have stopped her, I will miss our late night talks. She knew I would answer anytime of the night that she called, thats what friends are for, Velma I will miss you so much, I did get to tell you we love you last time I got to see you. Sure gonna miss you , but I'm glad you are not hurting so bad now , your friends, Bill an Linda McKinney
I wish we could have been closer in proximity so we could see each other more! She was my fun aunt who had a great sense of humor and a lot of Meredith common sense ...she will be missed!
An in-law, that didn't care if others thought of you as an"out- law"! 8Spoke her mind, and stood her ground. Hugs to ya Butch , Pam, Amy... n all the rest. She will be missed. I'm sorry for your loss.
Butch: We were so sorry to hear of Velma's passing. You are in our thoughts and prayers at this time.
I'm so so sorry for your loss. Love n hugs to you Pam and family. Your momma was a sweet lady. She'll be missed
Oh Pam! I'm so so sorry! Always enjoyed Velma and her sassy attitude! She will be missed. That is really a great pic of her.
It's sad when someone you know becomes someone you knew. I was so stunned when I heard about Velma's passing. I thought she was such a big presence in everyone's lives that she surely would be there forever. She always displayed acts of tenderness, grace, and decency to me. She had such a magnetic personality, she just drew you closer to her. When Velma came into the room, it always made me smile, and feel like everything was going to be ok as long as she was there. Albert Schweitzer said, "The purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others." I would strongly say that Velma was that kind of a human. She had hands that always helped others; feet that brought her to you when you were in need; eyes that shined with laughter and mischief; and ears that always were ready to listen. I am so thankful for Velma's presence in my life, and I know my father would say the same. She was one of his favorite jokesters. Queen Elizabeth II said “Grief is the price we pay for love.” Velma will be grieved by so many because she was loved by all. The world will be less bright without her. My heart aches for Butch, Pam and her entire family. My husband and I will pray they are surrounded by love and support. Sharon and Gene Akes-Caves
