David Louis Sledge, age 80, of Flora, Illinois, passed away peacefully Wednesday evening, July 29, 2026, at Axiom Healthcare of Flora, following a long journey with Alzheimer’s disease. His loving wife was by his side, along with his sister-in-law, Tammy Dulaney, brother-in-law, Tony Dulaney, and Axiom employee and special friend, Jamie West, all offering their care and support.
He was born July 18, 1946, in Mt. Vernon, the son of Dee L. and Betty (Tate) Sledge. He was united in marriage to Vickie S. Dulaney on June 27, 1981, in Flora, and together they shared 45 wedding anniversaries.
David worked throughout his life as a carpenter and also served as a bookkeeper for Sledge Drilling. He later became co-owner of B & D Sledge Drilling. His work allowed him to meet many people over the years, and he especially valued the friendships and connections he made along the way.
A veteran of the United States Navy, David proudly served during the Vietnam War. He was also a member of Flora Elks Lodge 1659, the Sportsman Club, and the Shriners.
In his free time, David enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, boating, reading, working crossword puzzles, and playing cards. More than anything, he enjoyed being around his friends and the many people he came to know through his work and involvement in the community.
He is survived by his wife: Vickie Sledge of Flora; 2 sons: Matthew Dee Sledge of Kiln, Mississippi, and Chris Sledge of Texico; a granddaughter and the apple of his eye: Ember Sledge; and 2 grandsons: Tyler Sledge and Tyson Sledge.
He was preceded in passing by his parents; grandparents; a brother: Steven L. Sledge; special uncles: Walter R. (Marilyn) Sledge and Bob (Dolly) Sledge; his father-in-law and mother-in-law: Gene and Melba Dulaney; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
A graveside ceremony and interment will be held at 4 p.m. on Monday, August 10, 2026, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Mt. Vernon. In David’s memory, memorial donations are suggested to Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) or Residential Hospice.
The family would like to thank David’s wonderful caregivers at Axiom Healthcare and Residential Hospice for the care and compassion shown to him and his family throughout this difficult time.

Vicki...this has been a long painful journey for you. What a wonderful love you both had for each other that so many never experience. My thoughts and prayers are with you my friend. May God give you peace at this time.
Vickie and family, we are very sorry for your loss, but yet I realize it has been a long hard battle for you and David. Alzheimers is a terrible, terrible disease. Know that we are thinking of you all. Thank you for always being their for our sister Shirley. She appreciated and loved you very much and so do Nancy and I.

Vickie sorry to hear of David's passing and for your loss. I thought a lot of David and considered him a good friend. We sure enjoyed his company a great deal when he was>here with us at Deep Rock. He was well thought of here and in the oil and gas industry all around.
