A family graveside ceremony will be held at Phillips Cemetery, Kinmundy. Family and friends will be welcomed at Bethlehem Christian Church, rural Clay City, on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at 1:30 p.m.
Sarah “Sue” Hampsten, 73, of Clay City, Illinois.
Sue was born July 15, 1952, to Ernie and Maxine (Rooksberry) Mulvany of Kinmundy. Sue married Dennis Hampsten on March 20, 1976, in Kinmundy, and died April 22, 2026, at Axiom Gardens of Flora.
She graduated from Kinmundy-Alma High School in 1970, Saint Louis Christian College in 1974, and later Eastern Illinois University. While at Saint Louis, she was in their touring choir. Sue spent her life dedicated to children as a day care provider and later as a teacher. She was a substitute teacher in all the area schools, then with special needs, and last with troubled youth. She also spent many years as a Sunday School teacher and later a song leader. Sue was a member of Bethlehem Christian Church in Clay City.
Sue is survived by her husband: Dennis Hampsten of Clay City; daughter: Sarah (Henry) Helm of Humboldt; daughter-in-law: Lindsey Conn of Texas; siblings: Donna (Kenneth) Huntsman, Greg Mulvany, Glenda (Sonny) Krutsinger, James (Janet) Mulvany, and Cindy (Gary) Dippold; her beloved fur baby: Bandit; special friend: Shelly Wilkins; and many nieces and nephews. Sue was preceded in death by her parents; a son: James; and a brother: Robert Mulvany.

Our women’s group who met every Wednesday at the Tin Cup always welcomed a conversation with Sue and husband Dennis as they sat in their regular booth next to our table. One could never forget Sue’s wonderful contagious smile. Remembering your family in prayer.

My condolences to the family on Sue’s passing. I shared rides to Eastern with Sue when we were both working towards our teaching certificates. She had a passion for teaching.

She was my Sunday School teacher when I was a kid. She was a very sweet Christian lady. The family and extended family are in my thoughts and prayers.
