Thomas Edward “Ed” Coleman, age 94, of Flora, Illinois, passed away Friday, October 24, 2025, in Effingham, IL.

Ed was the son of Noah Jerome “Pete” Coleman and Naomi Ruth Coleman born on September 12, 1931. He was raised in DuQuoin, IL with his brothers Bill Coleman and Don Coleman. DuQuoin is where Ed met the love of his life, Joan Emling Coleman. They were high school sweethearts that married June 28, 1953, and celebrated 69 wonderful years of marriage together.

While in high school at DuQuoin High School Ed excelled in baseball which led him to play baseball in college at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale as a Saluki. Ed was the 2nd baseman on the team from 1949-1952. Ed lettered all 4 years at SIUC and played in every game, except for one, during his time as a Saluki. Upon graduating college, Ed was recruited to play with a minor league organization, but the government was also recruiting young men to serve in the military in the Korean Conflict. Ed enlisted in the U.S. Army and served 4 years at Fort Bragg and then also served in Korea.

Upon returning from his military service, Ed and Joan started their family in DuQuoin with the birth of son Jim. The family then moved to Paris, IL where Ed was a teacher, coach, athletic director and principal at Memorial Grade School and Paris High School. During this time, Ed and Joan lovingly added to their family with Mark Coleman and Amy Coleman Herdes. During their time in Paris, Ed and Joan also ran the Surf Club with their sons during the summer months. During Ed’s coaching years, many nights were spent with his family in the stands watching him coach his teams.

In the summer of 1975, the family of 5 moved to Flora where Ed was hired to be the Flora High School principal. Ed was blessed to serve within the Flora School District as both a principal and then Assistant Superintendent until his retirement. He often spoke of the undertaking of helping rebuild the Flora High School after the fire. He spent many nights at sporting events, most notably the Wolves Basketball games where he announced and created many special friendships with those who kept the books and scores for the teams. Even until the end, Ed would talk about being a teacher, administrator, memories from his time in education and the vast changes in the education system. He truly was an administrator for life and appreciated the many relationships he developed with students, parents, faculty and staff over the years. He always enjoyed hearing when people that remembered him from school would ask how he was doing.

Fishing and family were definite passions of Ed’s as well as enjoying the beauty of nature.  The kids well remember many family trips to enjoy the beauty of the fall leaves changing as well as traveling to the Covered Bridge Festival in Indiana. Ed always took the scenic route on car rides as he would sing for Joan who loved listening to him. During retirement they enjoyed taking short trips together and sitting and enjoying the nature of the beautiful home that they had built. Every day they enjoyed the beauty of the large variety of birds that would visit their feeders at their country home. Spending time with family and hearing about the various activities and successes of his kids and grandchildren made Ed and Joan extremely happy and proud of the family that they had created through love and support.

Joan and Ed had three children that they were very proud of Jim (Angie) Coleman of Florida, Mark (Cathy) Coleman of Flora and Amy (Kerry) Herdes of Xenia. Ed was also very loved by his grandchildren Courtney (Aaron) Wyman, Ashley (Blake) Knearem, Damien “DJ” Coleman, Morgan Coleman, Bryton (Torrey) Herdes, and Eliza Herdes, great-grandchildren include Baylee Wilkins, Ava Wyman, Breyden Knearem, Delia Knearem, Mia Herdes and Cohen Herdes. Great-great grandchildren include Willow, Eden, Emery, Ellison, Brantley and Hazel. They will all miss him very much but will always know he is with them.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, wife Joan, siblings and in-laws as well as many cousins and family members he spoke fondly of and continued to visit their graves to pay his respect.

A visitation will be held at Frank and Bright Funeral Home in Flora on Wednesday, October 29th from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A private graveside funeral will be held in McElvain Cemetery in DuQuoin on October 30th. Memorial donations may be given to Clay County Cancer Crusaders or to the Flora Academic Foundation, and these will be accepted through the funeral home.  To share a condolence or memory, visit: www.frankandbright.com

Mr. Coleman was my coach at Mayo Jr. High. He was the Best. Although he did carry his fraternity paddle and wasn’t above using it when needed be. I had the privilege of staying with him and Joan for a week when I was in high school. My Dad and Mom were away at a conference and the Coleman’s took me into their home so I wouldn’t miss school or ball games. Fond memories of both of them.

MrColeman was a wonderful & gentle sole. Although I didn’t go to Memorial Elementary School, many of my friends did. Always having kind things to say about him, unless they were in trouble. We belonged to the Surf Club so we saw him watching over all the kids, who’s parents had to work(or just need a breather from their children). He always had a smile and encouraging word.
