Pete Walker

   Owen “Pete” Walker, age 91, of Flora, Illinois, passed away Wednesday evening, November 17, 2021, at Flora Rehabilitation & Health Care Center.

   He was born September 17, 1930, in Grayville, Illinois, the son of Herman Owen and Jewell (Baker) Walker.  He was united in marriage to Esther Tolliver in 1982, and they shared 39 wonderful years together.

   Pete retired from Haliburton after 27 years.  He was a member of the Flora First Christian Church and the Flora Elks Club.  He loved his family and grandchildren and always carried a small book with important information and especially birthdays and anniversaries of the special people in his life.  Pete was a dedicated volunteer at the Clay County Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry for 18 years.  For his volunteer work he earned several awards, including special recognition by the Flora Chamber of Commerce who named him the 2014 Citizen of the Year along with his wife, Esther.  He received the Outstanding Volunteer Award from C.E.F.S. and the Alumni of the Year award from Clay County 4-H.  Pete was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed bowling and watching all sports.    

   He is survived by his wife: Esther Walker of Flora; children: Mark Walker of Mattoon, Shari (Tom) Evans of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, Diane Parker of Mattoon, Michael (Kendra) Walker of Altamont, Randy (Ricarda) Tolliver of Louisville, Kelly (Cindy) Tolliver, and Rick (Lori) Tolliver of Xenia; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson; a brother: Bob Walker of Grayville; and 3 nieces and 1 nephew.

   He was preceded in death by his parents: Herman Owen and Jewell Walker; a sister: Norma Todd; a grandson: Seth Tolliver; and a niece: Caren Alsop.

   A graveside ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 20, 2021, at Rusk Cemetery with Loren Holloway officiating.  A visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Saturday at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora.  Memorial donations are suggested to Clay County Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry or Flora First Christian Church and will be accepted through the funeral home.  To share a memory or condolence visit: www.frankandbright.com
