Modena Green

Dec 19th, 1922 - Apr 1st, 2020

Modena B. Green, age 97, of Flora, Illinois, passed away Wednesday evening, April 1, 2020, at Flora Rehabilitation & Health Care Center.

She was born December 19, 1922, in Garden Hill Township, Illinois, the daughter of Pearl Omer and Ruby Jennings (Hilliard) Gaines.  She was united in marriage to Robert William Green Sr. on April 15, 1950, and together they shared 29 years of marriage until his death June 4, 1979.

Modena worked in her younger years with companies supporting the Navy.  Later, she was a homemaker and worked many years as a CNA.  Modena was a spirited woman who had a deep love for family and all that she called family.  Keeping track of her family heritage was a passion and a joy for her.  Her love truly shined for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.  Never missing a birthday, even in the end.  Modena was known for her charitable spirit as she would give the shirt off her back if she knew it would help someone in need.  She had a very strong faith in God and knew Christ as her personal Savior.  When she was young, she attended church, and even for a time sang on the Billy Graham Gospel Hour.  Modena enjoyed many things in her long, full life.  She was a member of the Eagles, Moose, Elks, VFW, and the American Legion.  She collected interesting items especially if they would bring a laugh or smile to someone's face, and you could usually find her watching westerns, telling stories, or interacting with family and friends.  She will be missed dearly by all those that loved her, and her absence will leave a hole in the many lives that she touched.

She is survived by 5 sons: Robert (Freda) Green Jr., Roland (Ruth) Green, Randy Green (partner Timothy Winters), Rick (Mindy) Green, and Roger “Sam” Green; 4 daughters: Ruby Weller, Charleen Osterholtz, Rhonda (Jim) Evans, Rosalie (Mike) Slater; a son-in-law: Brad Eastin; 12 grandchildren; 4 step grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; 1 step great-great-grandchild; 2 brothers: Ivan Gaines and Larry Gaines; 4 sisters: Deana Anderson, Jeanette Coggin, Carolyn Cannon, and Goldie Shaw; and stepmother: Wanda Gentry.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Omer and Ruby Gaines; husband: Robert Green Sr.; 2 sons: Ronald Green and Ronnie Green; daughter: Rowena Green; 2 sons-in-law: Lee “Butch” Osterholtz and Ron Weller; a daughter-in-law: Cheryl Green; a grandson: Ronnie Green II; 4 brothers; and 1 sister.

A private graveside ceremony will be held at Powers Cemetery in Xenia.  Arrangements are in the care of Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora.  Memorial donations are suggested to Fur A Good Paws or Clay County Animal Rescue & Shelter and will be accepted through the funeral home.  To share a memory or condolence visit: www.frankandbright.com
