Chuck Schryer

Dec 14th, 1950 - Jan 8th, 2019

Charles “Chuck” F. Schryer III, age 68, of Flora, Illinois, passed away Tuesday afternoon, January 8, 2019, at his home.

He was born December 14, 1950, in Oak Park, the son of Charles F. Schryer Jr. and Wanita (Colclasure) Schryer.  He married Paula Rae Jensen on February 25, 1984, in Spokane, Washington.

For more than a decade, Chuck has devoted countless hours and resources to bringing Disabled American Veterans (DAV) transportation to Flora and Clay County.  While serving as First Vice Chairman of Chapter 80 in 2008, a new vehicle was dedicated.  In 2016 he was honored as the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award as Volunteer of The Year during a ceremony in Washington D.C., highlighting his 250,000+ miles of travel which insured local veterans could receive access to healthcare.  Chuck worked tirelessly to coordinate financial and scheduling arrangements for drivers that could help keep the local operation running smoothly.  As an Army veteran who served during 3 campaigns in Vietnam from 1968-70, Chuck saw the need to create awareness about the mission of the DAV and gave his time generously.  He was past Commander of Flora American Legion #14, had been a supporter of Flora VFW #3999, and a past member of Kiwanis.  His grandkids were an incredibly bright spot in his life, and he attended their activities when able and was always proud of them.  Chuck was of the Christian faith, and will be remembered by those who knew him best for his colorful humor and matter-of-fact demeanor.

Chuck is survived by his wife: Paula Schryer of Flora; children: Jennifer (Schryer) Woodward (Shawn) of Odin, Millard “Junior” Schryer (Jessica) of Levelland, TX, Richard “Rick” Kull of Terre Haute, IN, and Christine James (Jesse) of Flora; grandchildren: Madison Miller of Beaver Creek, OH, Ashton Woodward of Salem, Cole Dodson of Alma, Chance Gambil of Patoka, Kalika Schryer of Levelland, TX, Colby Schryer of Levelland, TX, Jonathan Kull of Flora, Bethany Best of Flora, Tori Best of Flora, Clarece Cleveland of Louisville, Kyrsten Darrough of Flora, and Carson James of Flora; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings: Robert Schryer, Shirley Lewis, and Tom Schryer.

A Celebration of Life service will be 10 a.m. Saturday January 12, 2019, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora with the presentation of military honors.  Visitation will be 9 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.  Memorial donations are suggested to the local chapter of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and will be accepted through the funeral home.
