Mitzi Goldstein

Dec 21st, 1935 - Jun 15th, 2017

Mitzi Jean Goldstein, age 81, of Flora, Illinois, passed away Thursday morning, June 15, 2017, at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham.

Mitzi was born December 21, 1935, in Beattyville, Kentucky, the daughter of Arthur “Doc” and Carrie Alice (Kincaid) Abner.  She married Richard Arthur Goldstein on March 22, 1957, in Decatur, and together they shared 48 years of marriage.  Dick preceded her in death on May 3, 2005.

As an educator, Mitzi had many lasting memories that were made with students and friendships that were formed.  She was instrumental in the formation of the Flora Academic Foundation and was still an ongoing advisor.  Her commitment to education included helping mentor other teachers in writing skills.  Mitzi’s faith was evident throughout her life. She was an active member of First Christian Church and a member of the Beau Knot Sunday School Class for over 35 years.  She loved and enjoyed traveling, was a longtime participant of the Bridge Club, a Flora Wolves fan, and a big fan of Michael Jordan.  Mitzi served as National President of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, and was named the Flora Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 2004.  However, the joy of her life was her grandkids and extended to her great-grandkids.

She is survived by her children: Debbie Dawkins (husband Mark) of Xenia, Ross Goldstein (Holly Shock) of Olney, and Ron Goldstein (wife Prudy) of Flora; 7 grandchildren: Sean (Jackie) Dawkins, Crystal (Ryan) Ballard, Cody Dawkins, Toby Joseph (Lana) Goldstein, Carrie Goldstein, Isaac Goldstein, and Dawson Goldstein; 8 great-grandchildren: Hanna, Collyn, Miah, Will, Johnathon, Cora, Tucker, and Hadley; 1 brother: Tom (the late Carolyn) Abner of Flora; along with her beloved nieces and nephews, and some very special friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and an infant brother: William.

A funeral service for Mitzi Goldstein will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 21, 2017, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora.  Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.  A visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 5-8 p.m. at Frank & Bright Funeral Home.  Memorial donations in Mitzi’s memory may be given to First Christian Church or Flora Academic Foundation and will be accepted at the funeral home.
