Jack Meyer

Apr 5th, 1923 - Nov 8th, 2016

John Richard (Jack) Meyer, 93, Flora, Illinois, died November 8, 2016, after a short illness.  He was born in Olney, Illinois on April 5, 1923 to Ralph and Lena Meyer.

He was predeceased by his wife Ruth Ann. He is survived by his children, Carol (Mark) Cabaj, Normal, IL, Paul (Julie) Meyer, Kansas City, MO, and Janet (Gregg) Dixon, Fairhope, AL, and 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Jack completed both his undergraduate and law degrees from Washington University in St. Louis. He and Ruth Ann were married during World War II when he was serving in the Navy.  He joined his father Ralph in their law partnership in Flora in 1947.  Jack served as the Flora city attorney, Republican Chairman of Clay County, precinct committeeman, and also as Special Assistant to the Attorney General of Illinois.  He acted as city judge up into his eighties. After 57 years of practicing law, Jack closed his law office but never would say he was retired.

Jack served as an Elder of the First Christian Church of Flora for over 40 years.  He was a Trustee on the Board of Trustees of Lincoln Christian College 50 years.  He was a member of the board of directors of the Phillippine Mission Churches of Christ and also was instrumental in the establishment of Oil Belt Christian Service Camp 70 years ago.  He also served as Missions Committee chairman for First Christian Church for several years.

He was an avid fan of jazz music and enjoyed going to jazz festivals. He loved dark chocolate, Ruthie’s cooking, and his nightly bowl of ice cream.  He lovingly cared for Ruthie (“the best thing that ever happened to me”), and was a loving father, and a faithful, persevering, servant of God.

A memorial service for Jack Meyer will be 2 p.m. Saturday, November 12, 2016, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home, Flora, with a visitation beginning at 1 p.m.  Military honors will be presented at the conclusion of the service at the funeral home.  A private interment will be held in Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Ruth Ann Meyer Memorial Scholarship Fund, Oil Belt Christian Service Camp, 555 Park Road, Flora, IL 62839.
