Genevieve Wenzel

    Genevieve Hufhines Wenzel, age 86, of Sarasota, Florida and formerly of Flora, passed away on Sunday, March 23, 2014 at NorthCare Hospice in North Kansas City, Missouri. 

    Genevieve was born December 3, 1927 in Wayne County near Johnsonville to Francis A. and Versa (Miley) Hufhines.  She married George Dunaway on November 25, 1967.  He preceded her in death on January 20, 1996.  She later married Fred Wenzel on July 25, 1998 and he preceded her in death on February 24, 2014. Genevieve worked at Obrecht’s in Cisne when she was young, and later in Florida at an A&P store and a dress shop.  In 1948 Genevieve joined the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints (Community of Christ) and was baptized in the Brush Creek Congregation.  In Florida she was a dedicated member of Sarasota-Bradenton Branch of the Community of Christ Church and she and George were friends to many of their neighbors and members of their congregation, always willing to help others when needed.  Genevieve enjoyed playing Scrabble and donated many loaves of sourdough bread that she baked.  She also cherished the family visits over the years and spending time with the new generation of nieces and nephews.  In recent years, Genevieve and Fred found companionship and made a home with their dog “Buddy”, spending time watching Tampa Bay Rays games.

    She is survived by 2 sisters: Jeanette Dean of Xenia and Mabel Hufhines of Flora; step-daughter: Jean (John) Noren; step-son: Frederick R. (Chloette) Wenzel; 2 nieces: Kay (Randy) Miller of Johnsonville and Linda (Jim) Kirkpatrick of Kansas City, Missouri;  2 great-nieces: Dee Ann (Richard) Hoover and Jennifer (Collin) Swearingen; 3 great-nephews: Nicholas Gustafson, Ryan (Jamie) Gustafson, and Alex Gustafson; 3 great-great-nieces:  Katie Hoover, Madison Swearingen, and Corra Gustafson; 2 great-great-nephews: Nate Hoover and Spencer Swearingen; along with several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, a sister (Imogene Hufhines), an infant sister (Barbara June), and her brother-in-law (Oscar Dean).

    The funeral service for Genevieve Wenzel will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 29, 2014 at Brush Creek Community of Christ, rural Xenia.  Interment will follow in Brush Creek Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 1-2:30 p.m. Saturday at the church.  Frank & Bright Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.  Memorials may be given to Brush Creek Community of Christ and will be accepted at the church or through the funeral home.  An online guest book is available at www.frankandbright.com.
