Gale was born on December 14, 1932, in Flora, Illinois, a place that, no matter where life took her, she always called home. Throughout her life, she lived in Illinois, Alaska, and Texas, building lasting friendships everywhere she went.
Gale was a teacher in Monahans, Texas, and was married to her beloved husband, Bill Birkes, for 52 years. Their marriage was a special one, built on deep love and devotion to one another. Bill doted on Gale, and she lovingly cared for him throughout their life together. They were true companions who enjoyed traveling across the United States, spending summers in Illinois and simply sharing life side by side.
More than anything, Gale loved her family. She shared an especially close relationship with her daughter, Gina, and was a devoted grandmother who rarely missed an opportunity to support her grandchildren, following them to activities throughout their high school and college years. Later in life, her great-grandchildren brought her tremendous joy—as did her beloved granddog, Scout.
Gale treasured friendship and maintained close relationships throughout the many places she lived. In her later years, Gale developed a special companionship with Gaylon Winkler, whose friendship brought joy and comfort to her life. She also enjoyed the many sweet friendships she made at her assisted living community.
Gale was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar and Pauline Bryan; her sister, Wilma Lowe; and her beloved husband, Bill Birkes.
She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Gina Baker and husband Robert; grandchildren, Lecia Hawkins and husband Joe, and Aaron Baker and wife Sarah; great-grandchildren, Layla Hawkins, Eli Hawkins, and Liam Baker; and, of course, her granddog, Scout.
Her life took her many places, but her heart always remained in Flora, Illinois. Gale will be laid to rest there, beside her beloved husband, Bill.
A graveside ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at Elmwood Cemetery in Flora. Those who wish to attend are asked to please arrive directly at the cemetery.
