David L. Owen, age 89, of Clay City, Illinois, passed away Sunday night, April 19, 2020, at his home.
He was born April 12, 1931, in Flora, Illinois, the son of David Peter and Lourena (Grove) Owen. He was united in marriage to Anna C. Colōn on March 27, 1953, in Fajardo, Puerto Rico and together they shared 33 years of marriage until her death April 15, 1986. He later married Rosa Billingsley in 1989.
David served in the U.S. Navy with the Naval Construction Battalion stationed in Puerto Rico where he met and married his wife, Anna. He worked for the railroad prior to joining the Navy and later built laundromats for Kerby and worked at Lincoln Auto Parts. He was a deputy for the Clay County Sheriff's Office, worked as an EMT for the Campbell and Clay County Ambulance Service, and was a dispatcher for the Flora Police Department. David enjoyed traveling, building and painting model cars, wood projects, and spending time with his special dog Boo Boo. He was a member of the Flora VFW Post 3999 and Flora American Legion Post 14.
He is survived by a daughter: Angela (Larry) Martin of Flora; 3 grandchildren: Chandra Martin, Alexander Martin, and Madison Young (Quentin); 1 great-granddaughter: Lilly Young; a sister: Dorothy Engelmeier; a special niece: Linda DeFrank; and 3 bonus daughters: Paula Cooper Edwards, Lisa Johns, and Sherry Lundergan.
He was preceded in death by his parents: David Peter Owen and Lourena Wood; wife: Anna C. Owen; brothers: Ora, Robert, and Sammie Wood; and sisters: Jean Bender, Violet Boyd, Genevra Lee, Esther Pyle, Helen Handlin, and 2 infant sisters: Jessie Ellen and Bertha.
A private graveside service will be held at Elmwood Cemetery in Flora with the presentation of military funeral honors. Arrangements are in the care of Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora.
